Finally happened, actively looking to switch from Adobe

Adobes latest change to their TOS (Term Of Service) which I and many others find not very acceptable was the kick needed to finally start actively looking to migrate to alternate platforms. So the switch from Adobe has begun in earnest.

    Butter Tart Friday

I had already switched from Adobe Premier to Black Magics Davinci Resolve as a video editor. And now have purchased On1 Photo RAW as a very promising good candidate to replace my long standing association with Adobes Photoshop and Lightroom. I have been using photoshop for decades from way back when I started on version 2 in 1991/1992.

While there are many photo editors out there both free and paid, not many have a robust integrated library management system. So one of the hardest part was deciding on something that might work as a replacement DAM (digital asset management) solution for my tens of thousands of images most stored in adobes dng format, that have accumulated over my 1/2 century (Yikes) of poking around in the business of photography.

I’ll try to post updates as I find time to work on the migration to a new platform, when I am in country, Couple of biggish trips to far off destinations are in the works at the moment where I won’t have access to my main servers.

if you are also interested here is the link to On1 Photo Raw, they do have a 30 day trial!

Palantir – The See All Mystic Camera

The mirror-less explosion removed the flappy Reflex mirror from DSLR’s (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras. It did not remove the physical shutter mechanism (at least in most bodies) the main exception is the very expensive Nikon R9 that has no physical shutter. One reason for the continued existence of the physical shutter in camera bodies is a phenomenon knows as “rolling shutter”, exhibited by an all cameras when operating using an electronic shutter.

The Rolling shutter effect is caused by sensor readout being a sequential line by line process and any movement during the readout will cause the resulting image to distort.

Each shutter actuation in both DSLR’s and Mirror-less bodies brings you one click closer to the demise of the shutter mechanism in your camera.

Here is a table gleaned from the main Camera manufacturers specifications for the MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) for some of their various camera bodies

Early gathering of my bag farm as it was in 2012

The camera backpack and bags farm

As requirements and needs change over time one accumulates a variety of camera bags and backpacks in the search of that “perfect” one “does it all” bag that does not exist!

I dragged them all out, took a photo of the bag family, and cataloged them all. (Going to have to take a new updated photo some day. Since I made half dozen or so new addition since this one was taken.)

These are the lists of the currently high use bags that head out with me. I have included a list of the entire bag family.

Lowepro seems to be the preferred go-to manufacturer for soft bags. In all my decades of use their products have never let me down!
Though the ThinkTank Retrospective 7 has become a favorite for city wanderings and air travel.
While Pelican (they also make Storm) are my choice for my hard shell cases.

I have replaced both the old LowePro Photo Trekker Classic and Slingshot 300 AW backpacks with a newer design Lowepro Flipside 400 AW backpack. Hoping for lighter weight and less stress on an easy to malfunction shoulder.

The search for a camera bag and backpack that is waterproof, weighs next to nothing, is comfortable and can hold everything including the kitchen sink continues!

The great camera bag reduction of 2022

Near the end of 2022 we gave away, donated or sold many of the bags we had accumulated. Thus reducing the number to the ones that were actually being used. Somehow even after “the big reduction” there remain a lot of bags that I still a need to find places to store them all.

  • The Social Media platform hunt

    The Social Media platform hunt

Hunting for a set of decent Social Media platforms

social media politician amoeba will engulf us all

It is a new year, time to clear out the old. Over time ended up with multiple accounts on too many different social media platforms to continue wasting time on and bothering with. So I am making the decision to drastically cut down the list to only a few that I plan to actively continue using.

    Synopsis

For this activity I looked at twenty one (Yikes!) platforms I may have had userid's on.
Thirteen are now sanitized, purged and deleted.
Two are still being evaluated, but most likely will be flushed.
and a potentially new one is being looked at.
Five platforms have been kept, one in each of the major functional category
(photo sharing, video sharing, business contacts, team messaging, blogging)

The caveat: Nothing is actually free. On platforms owned by the likes of Meta(facebook/instagram/whatsapp), Google(youtube/blogger), Microsoft(LinkedIn), SpaceKaren(twitter), China(tiktok, 500px), you are primarily the product with your data being harvested for resale.

    Selection criteria

    • Must be “free” to use, (since you are creating the platforms content)
    • Ads and algorithms must be blockable, (As I have absolutely no interest in seeing their time wasting BS)
    • Must be “free world” owned.
    • Must be easy to use from multiple platforms and devices.

    Decision key

Keep = actively build on and use platform
    ?quit? = still evaluating exiting.
    maybe  = need more information
quit = clear/sanitize old content, abandon platform, leave a zombie placeholder
delete = wipe and delete id immediately.
n/a = not applicable, platform unsuitable, remove any IDs.

Posts on retained platforms sanitized using a "free" schedulable post redaction tool.

Palantir See All mystic DSLR CSC
Palantir See All, the mystic DSLR

Are camera CSC body costs rising, stable or falling?

    * NEW * Table updated January 2023 to include the mirror-less R series!

To answer that question I took a look into the past. Checking in on the mid level CSC bodies from Canon since the introduction of the venerable 3.1 megapixel D30 way back in 2000. I grouped both DSLRs and mirrorless bodies under the CSC umbrella.

I created a table of a brief history of Canon DSLR & Mirrorless introduction dates and their pricing at the time of introduction.
Not including the top end 1D series and low end Rebel series.
Basically cut the top and bottom off,  just looking at the middle so called prosumer level bodies.

The table lists the Canon body “Manufacturer Suggester Retail Prices” in the USA at time of their announcements.
Which surprisingly seems to have remained fairly stable over the years for each series of bodies.

If you factor in the ever rising inflation rate the actual cost of the bodies has in fact been slightly decreasing! Right along with the decreasing buying power of the mighty dollar as the years advance.

  • End of Chasing the Ever Elusive Pixel?

End of Chasing the Ever Elusive Pixel?

    glass bottle skull
    glass bottle skull

    Chasing the ever elusive pixel.

I am at the point I don’t know why I am bothering.
It is 2nd quarter 2019 and I have not taken a single image I was actually interested in taking this year so far.
Yes images have been made, but all for others, nothing that I would have dragged out equipment for given a choice.
Maybe it is finally time to hang up the cameras.

Many of the photo cohorts I know have gone a different route.
They run out every now and then to hunt down a few great images, while videoing their trip and process.
Filling up a lot of time with impressive drone shots and b-roll to try to create a compelling video,
then trying to use it to pedal their photo trips and courses.
Basically they have become photo-tour guides who also happen to take images occasionally.
For now it seems to pay well, one of the few remaining areas that still does.
But nothing I currently have interest in doing.

It is said “Never say never”, for me it seems I have reached the end of my interest in the pastime, at least for now.
Who knows maybe I’ll find something to get me going again someday, maybe not.

At the moment I am deciding whether to close out the social media groups, pages and accounts on Facebook/Instagram/twitter.
Many of which seem to have taken rather obnoxious turns, with the slobs hiding behind their keyboards spewing vitriol
at each other in many of what used to be former great groups.
I have already deleted my memberships from the ones that have degenerated the most, now deciding on the rest and the accounts themselves.

  • Farewell Photoshelter

    Well it finally happened.
    I closed my PhotoShelter account.
They provided an absolutely great service while I needed a bullet proof archive solution
and I highly recommend them for any business needing to safely store and deliver image files and prints world wide.

Click the following image to take a peek at PhotoShelter, and give their free trial a spin!

    photoshelter-logo

But I am winding down, all that I have left still active now is occasional art print sales and outstanding contracts.
And strangely people keep trying to talk me into trying the current stock market (cringe) with my terabytes of past images.
I just can’t see having put in all the time, skill, equipment and effort used to create the images,
then turning around and selling the them for (peanuts, which actually are expensive so) pennies,
trying to dive straight for the bottom and go for the “volume sales to make up the profits” mindset.
Essentially a commodities market which to me seems a losing proposition for the creative.
Somehow does fit with my more traditional outlook.

I am however thinking I might try uploading (unloading?) complete crap, essentially my past rejects pile.
Which would have to first be converted from raw to whatever is required for uploads now,
to some of the microstock services and see how that fares against the ad nauseum pablum I see flooding the current lowest cost crowd source mentality market.

Anyway I got off-topic, this post was to say farewell to a long time partner service, that served me well for many years.
I was with them from 2009 to 2019.
I wish them well on their new & upcoming endeavors!

Here’s my comparison of 5 different relatively inexpensive (under 200$cdn) mic options.

Over time as I started to make videos I found the sound quality was bugging me.
So I embarked on a mini-quest to improve on the audio I was capturing.
Eventually ending up with four external mics and the internal camera mic
(I also have a few studio mics but that is for another time.)

Here is a video I made while recording from all 5 sources at the same time in a couple of different locations..
